'˜I want to say how amazing the support has been from customers coming in just to say 'how are you doing?',' she said. '˜This has really struck a chord '“ it's a horrible thing but the element of the mindless stealing of charity boxes has hit home.

'˜I've had flowers, cards and hugs galore and it's been heartwarming, although I would rather that I didn't have to go through it in the first place. This is a community shop and this has been exceptionally displayed by people's reactions.'

A fundraising page was set up by regular customer Marie Pazzard to replace the stolen charity cash and also to help pay for repairs to the shop's door. The original target was £500 but last night the total stood at £610. The fundraising page can be found here.

Police want to hear from anyone who knows about the break-in. Call 101, quoting 44180385335.
