MUM-OF-FOUR Josephine Hallett has been ordered to start paying off £6,500 of unpaid council tax or face jail.

The unemployed 38-year-old was brought before a district judge at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court over seven years of unpaid council tax owed to Havant Borough Council.

Prosecutor Daniel Lucas said Hallett had been arrested on a warrant after failing to turn up at a previous court hearing.

Hallett, of Wait End Road, Waterlooville, told the court she was sorry for not paying the money.

‘I was stupid not to pay it,’ she said. ‘I used to drink really heavily.’

She said that she had a partner who would help her pay off the debt.

District Judge Anthony Calloway ordered her to pay back £40 a week, staring in 14 days, or face jail.

He said: ‘I think because of the history of non co-operation I have got to focus the mind.

‘The debt is substantial. You will go to prison and you will come out and the debt will still remain.’
