A THIEF who stole a purse from a 78-year-old woman is being hunted by police.

The victim was outside Amberley Jewellers in London Road, Waterlooville, when a teenager told her a woman had taken the purse from her shopping trolley.

The 18-year-old woman who spotted the crime then chased the suspect but lost her in the crowd and returned to the distraught elderly victim and accompanied her to the police station.

The stolen purse contained store and bank cards and £80 cash.

The theft happened at 3.25pm on Saturday, and police have just released details.

PC Gary Bowden said: ‘This an example of someone callously stealing the possessions of an elderly person while they are out shopping.

‘Please can all shoppers remain vigilant when shopping and ensure any handbags are closed in between use and kept close to their person at all times.

‘Anyone who can offer us information about the person responsible for this theft should get in touch.’

The suspect was slim and aged in her 20s to early 30s with black hair. She was about 5ft 7in and wore tight navy jeans with lighter blue patches on, a black coat and she carried a square shoulder bag.
