NEARLY 40 knives and swords were handed in during a police amnesty.

The 37 fencing sabres, kitchen knives and machetes were collected under Operation Sceptre at Portsmouth central police station.

Owners were given a chance to turn in the blades without fear of repercussion.

The amnesty finished on Wednesday. It comes as figures for knife crime were published on Thursday.

Shocking figures show 585 knife crimes were committed in the county, including six attempted murders and nine rapes or sexual assaults.
