A WOMAN was pushed to kneel on a pavement as she was assaulted by a man.

The victim had been walking down Victoria Road North, in Southsea, when she felt the presence of a man behind her.

The man got closer to her and grabbed her hair, which was in a ponytail.

He put his hand over her mouth and pushed her to kneel on the pavement.

The woman managed to fight the man off, although she was punched in the side of the head. The victim ran off towards Albert Road, while the offender ran the other way towards Fratton Road. It happened at around 4am yesterday. The woman did not sustain any injuries.

Police have issued a description of the attacker – a white male, around 5ft 4in tall, of average build. He smelt of alcohol and was wearing a red-hooded top, blue jeans and trainers.

Detective Constable Sheena Ives said: ‘This is a very unusual incident. It is not clear what the offender’s motive was but he appears to have been scared off when the victim fought back.

‘We would encourage anyone with information to come forward.’
