Officers investigating the serious assault on a 69-year-old man on Sunday are keen to track down a witness who could help to progress their enquiries.

The victim hit his head on the road following a dispute on the one-way system on Bury Road at around 5.50pm.

He was with his wife who was in a wheelchair, when he had an altercation with another man who had been on a bicycle and who cycled off towards Stoke Road.

Having spoken to other witnesses officers now believe that a member of the public, whom they have not yet spoken to, may have taken photos on their mobile phone around the time of the assault.

A number of motorists who may have driven past at the time have also not yet contacted police.

The injured man remains at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham where he is being treated for a serious head injury.

A 28-year-old Gosport man arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent remains in custody.

Anyone who may have seen what happened should call 101 quoting Operation Duty (44160362901).
