A STUNNED would-be robber fled empty handed after his victim smacked him on the head with her walking aid.

The 57-year-old woman was walking alone when he grabbed her shoulder bag while she was laden down with shopping.

He tried to wrestle the bag from her but failed and fled after the victim hit him with the crutch she was using.

The woman was shaken but unhurt following the attack, which happened between 8.15pm and 8.25pm on Saturday between Landport Park and Bridgeside Close, in Landport.

Detective Constable Jackie Foley, said: ‘This was an attack on a lone female who was laden with shopping bags and using a crutch to assist her walking. She was in a well lit, although secluded, area when the attack took place, however, there may have been other people walking in the area at the time.’

The suspect is black, 20 to 25 and 5ft 8in tall. He wore a black hooded top and carried a small black rucksack with white lettering.
