A 70-year-old woman’s handbag was snatched in a distraction burglary.

The thief struck at her home in Henty Gardens, Chichester, after knocking on the door and claiming to be repairing a leak at a neighbouring property.

He said he wanted to check her home wasn’t affected and entered the property at about 7.30pm on December 2.

The thief left soon after and the victim later realised her handbag, including her purse and bank cards, was missing.

The victim later received a call from a man claiming to be from her bank and asking for her PIN.

She called police and then contacted her bank.

Detective Constable Claire Daysh said: ‘A genuine caller from a bank will never ask for your PIN.

‘In this case the victim realised straight away that something was wrong and cancelled her bank cards. Never let anyone into your home if you are suspicious about their reasons for calling.’

The man is aged in his mid-50s and is clean-shaven with light brown, thinning hair.
