A WOMAN was assaulted and verbally abused by a man near Baffins Pond in Portsmouth.

The attack happened at 10am last Thursday, with police releasing details yesterday.

The 34-year-old woman was walking in the Hayling Avenue area when she was verbally abused by a man before being dragged towards Baffins Pond. She managed to escape the man, but suffered bruising and cuts to her arms.

Investigating officer, PC Nicola Cory, said: ‘These events happened in a busy location with shops nearby.

‘Initial enquiries suggest there were three witnesses who saw what happened, one was believed to be a milkman.

‘Did you witness what happened? Did you believe that something was happening but were not quite sure?

‘Please contact police with any information that you may have. Any detail may seem minor to you, but could prove crucial for the investigation.’

A 41-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested on Friday on suspicion of assault. He was questioned and later bailed until Friday, December 13, 2013 pending further enquiries.
