SOUTH Parade Pier is open as usual, despite the fire that ravaged the Joanna’s nightclub opposite.

Pier operator Dawn Randall said she thought at one point during Tuesday evening’s fire, the pier would also go up in flames due to sparks flying across the road.

But thanks to fire fighters spraying the pier’s roof with water, the pier was saved.

‘We’ve got ash damage and the front of the roof is damaged as well,’ she said.

‘The fire has knocked us for six really, it all looks so different out there.

‘At one point I really thought we were going to go up as well.’

The fire took out the electricity cables serving businesses and residences in South Parade.

But the pier will continue trading by using a generator to provide electricity.

There are no shows or gigs taking place this weekend, but a Bay City Rollers tribute act will be playing on Saturday, August 27.

‘We’ll be using the generator for about a month,’ added Mrs Randall.

‘We are very much open as usual.’
