Days left to donate socks

A BUILDING society is launching one final call to city residents to ask them to donate socks to charity.

It comes as Yorkshire Building Society (YBS) prepares to conclude its month-long Socktober campaign on October 31, in partnership with End Youth Homelessness.

An annual initiative, it invites people close to its branches all over the country to donate new socks, clothes, woolly hats, gloves and scarves to help people battling homelessness.

It is hoped the appeal will not only help those on the margins stay warm during the winter time, but give them a boost to be able to dress suitably for interviews where job opportunities feasibly arise.

Figures show an estimated 86,000 young people in the UK are homeless and 115 young people in Portsmouth received some homelessness support from the local authority between 2016 and 2017.

Sasha Pauley, charity partnership manager for YBS, said: '˜Thanks to donations we receive in Portsmouth for our partnership with End Youth Homelessness we are able to support homeless young people into their own rented homes and break down the barriers that homeless young people face.'

To donate, visit the YBS branch at 105b Commercial Road, in Portsmouth city centre.
