POMPEY legend Steve Claridge was the main attraction for youngsters as he helped them celebrate the 10th anniversary of a sports scheme.

The Barclays Spaces for Sports, which works with the Football Foundation, has a facility in Bransbury Park, Bransbury Road, Eastney, where for the past 10 years young people have had the chance to play sports.

Both organisations put in £300,000 each to transform the outdoor areas of Bransbury Park, which now includes four full-size grass pitches, an artificial grass pitch and areas for basketball, netball, tennis, BMX and skateboarding.

Three additional grants totalling £81,348 were awarded by Barclays to ensure the sites remain sustainable over the long term.

Mr Claridge said: ‘It was a very proud moment for me to help celebrate 10 years of Barclays Spaces for Sports in my hometown.

‘You only have to listen to stories of young people to realise just how important sites like this are in providing opportunities for young people.’
