A GIRL from Gosport has recently been selected to represent the Girl Guides overseas.
Millie Bassindale, 15, has been chosen to represent the Guides at a jamboree in Finland next year.
Millie’s mother Sarah Bassindale said her daughter was delighted at being selected for the jamboree, which would be a nice reward for the volunteer work she had done
Sarah said: ‘While also studying for her GCSEs Millie puts a lot of time into helping her community.
‘She also helps at the nursing home where I work.
‘I am very, very proud of my daughter and her achievements.’
Millie is a young leader at both a Guide and Rainbow unit, and she now has to raise £1,200 to cover the cost of her trip.
She is organising a Christmas shopping event to raise funds, where Guides will sell their own homemade products.
The sale will take place on Saturday, November 22, from 1pm to 3pm at Thorngate Halls in Bury Road, Gosport.
There will be stalls selling stocking fillers, unwanted gifts, children’s toys and a tombola.
There will also be a raffle, and the first prize will be a weekend family break at a Bunn Leisure holiday park in Selsey.
Other prizes include free tickets for Gosport’s Explosion Museum and a family pass to Playshack and a family swim at Gosport Leisure Centre.
Sarah said Millie had been working hard to advertise the event, designing posters and leaflets, as well as writing to businesses for support.
Sarah said: ‘Millie is always helpful and a credit to the youth.
‘With two younger sisters, she is always putting others before herself.
‘Through young leaders she is also working towards a leadership qualification.’
Organised by the Guides and Scouts of Finland, the jamboree will be called Roihu 2016.
It will take place at the Evo campsite, just outside the town of Hämeenlinna in southern Finland.
