BEING deployed on a warship thousands of miles from home meant one of HMS Dragon’s crew missed out of this year’s Great South Run.

But that wasn’t enough to stop Petty Officer Jo Redfern.

The Portsmouth sailor clocked up the event’s 10-mile distance in the Type 45 destroyer’s gym, making up for her absence from the event itself.

Her efforts brought in almost £500 for Macmillan Cancer Care, donated by her generous colleagues on board the ship.

PO Redfern said: ‘Despite not being able to make the race day, I was determined to run the distance for the Macmillan nurses.

‘In fact, with the weather back home being so awful, I think some time on the ship’s running machine was the better deal in the end.’

HMS Dragon is in the final days of her maiden deployment in the Mediterranean and the Gulf.

She is due home in Portsmouth later this month.
