TO help commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day, here is a list of events happening this week.


D-Day Remembrance Service, Southsea Seafront, 10.50am

A remembrance service will be held at the D-Day Stone in Southsea to commemorate those killed during the D-Day landings. Following the ceremony there will be a parade from the D-Day Stone along the seafront past the D-Day Museum and the statue of Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery to Southsea Common. The D-Day Stone is located on the corner near South Parade Pier.

Normandy commemorations, Southsea Common, afternoon

Live coverage of the commemorations from Normandy which will be shown on big screens across the site.

D-Day films, Southsea Common, 7pm

Short films featuring D-Day veterans, a free screening of The Longest Day on big screens across the site and a live performance by The Poppy Girls.


The D-Day Experience, Southsea Common, 10am-6pm

Entertainment and activities for all the family featuring music from the 1940s, arena displays and parades, military vehicle exhibitors and displays, children’s activities, lindy hop dancers, 1940s vintage market, archive and war film screenings, talks by local veterans, home front displays, photographic exhibitions and street theatre performances.

Armed Forces Reserve Parade, Southsea Common, 11am

A parade of armed forces reservists along Southsea seafront, led by Portsmouth-based reservist unit HMS King Alfred which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Arena programme, 12pm-4pm

Afternoon of arena displays featuring a cadet field gun challenge, RAF Falcon parachute display team, marching bands and unarmed combat displays.

1940s concert, Southsea Common, 7pm

A family-orientated concert featuring the hit music of the 1940s with live singers and a big band building up to a fireworks finale on Southsea Common. Music will be provided by the Royal Marines Association Concert and Big Band, the Portsmouth Military Wives Choir, the Portsmouth Music Hub D-Day 70 Choir and the Milton Glee Club.

D-Day 70 Live at the Bandstand - Lindy Hop and Swing Afternoon, Southsea Common, 1pm-5pm

An afternoon of lindy hop and swing music to launch the Live at the Bandstand programme and also mark the finale of the D-Day 70th anniversary commemorations. This event features the Memphis Belle Swing Orchestra plus supporting acts.
