FLYING reconnaissance missions over the oceans to gather weather intelligence was the job of one veteran who recounted his story to the gathered crowd.

Flight Sergeant Pete Rackliff, 89, of Hill Head, belonged to 518 Squadron at RAF Tiree in Scotland.

Their role was to help provide weather intelligence by making reconnaissance flights over the Atlantic, North Sea and Norwegian Sea.

They would fly whatever the weather and sometimes for as long as 12 hours.

Flt Sgt Rackliff said: ‘It was good to see how many people came along today.

‘I was especially pleased to see how many young people there were, particularly those who were representing the armed forces of today.’
