AGGRESSIVE Russian actions close to the UK and terrorism around the world has emphasised the importance of maintaining a strong Royal Navy, according to defence secretary Michael Fallon.

Mr Fallon made the comments on a visit to BAE’s Govan shipyard in Glasgow as work began on HMS Medway, and the Prince Of Wales aircraft carrier neared its completion.

The US has urged European countries to do more to defend themselves against Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.

US President Barack Obama expressed concern that budget cuts in the UK may see Britain drop below Nato’s target of spending two per cent of GDP on the military.

Mr Fallon said: ‘The US wants to see all of us in Europe doing more to defend ourselves, and modernising our armed forces is a key response to that.’
