DIPLOMATIC talks to find a peaceful resolution to the Falklands crisis appeared to be faltering on April 13, 1982.

After holding 11 hours of talks with British leaders in London, US Secretary of State Alexander Haig warned: ‘A number of substantial difficulties remain.’

Argentina said it had accepted a proposal by Peru for a 72-hour truce around the Falkland Islands and was waiting for a British response.

Meanwhile, Mr Haig took a flight back to the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires to resume talks with the ruling junta.
