ON April 10, 1982, the US Secretary of State Alexander Haig arrived in the Agentinian capital Buenos Aires to start peace negotiations with Argentina’s ruling junta.

His arrival coincided with tens of thousands of Argentinians gathering at Plaza de Mayo to show their support for President Leopoldo Galtieri.

The EEC trade sanctions against Argentina, which were agreed the day before, came into effect on this day as countries came out in support of Great Britain.
