AFTER rapidly taking on stores and 14 operatives from the Special Boat Service, the hunter killer submarine HMS Conqueror quietly slipped out of her Faslane base on April 4, 1982.

Meanwhile, warships which had been on a Royal Navy exercise in the Mediterranean had started heading south from Gibraltar.

At Portsmouth dockyard, workers grafted through the night to prepare HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible and other ships to leave for war the next day.
