ON May 16, 1982, Britain’s United Nations ambassador Sir Anthony Parsons was sent back to New York with British peace proposals to try for a last-ditch resolution to the Falklands crisis.

A reconnaissance mission, code-named Operation Plum Duff, was launched from HMS Invincible on May 16, as a prelude to Operation Mikado.

Mikado was a planned SAS assault on the home base of Argentina’s five Etendard strike fighters at Río Grande, Tierra del Fuego.

However, the operation never came to fruition after Plum Duff failed to establish SAS troops on the ground to watch the Río Grande base.
