The Falkland Gardens, in Gosport, remembers the fallen soldiers of the 1980s war between Great Britain and Argentina.

As reported by The News, plans are in place to regenerate the waterfront area known as the ‘gateway to Gosport’ where the current bus station stands.

Gosport Borough Council hopes developers will pour money into the project that would create new businesses and jobs and would be an added attraction to the town.

With the 35th anniversary of the war approaching in May, Tory councillor Mark Hook, leader of Gosport Borough Council, says that there will be no development on the site until after then and that it will remain under the ownership of the council.

Cllr Hook said: ‘We are not planning to do anything at this moment.

‘The 35th anniversary is coming up next year so nothing will start until at least after that.

‘We have started to talk to developers and we would like to include thegardens as part of the plans but for them to remain similar to how they are.

‘It will still be an open space. However, it may have an area with a stage for things like performing arts and make it more vibrant.’

Earlier this year, a consultation was held by Gosport Borough Council over the future of the Falkland Gardens and some people said that they would like it to remain a peaceful area.

Derek Cole, chief executive of The Falklands Veterans Foundation, said: ‘People treat the area as a special place and we hope it stays how it is.

‘I have received a letter back from the council chief executive, Ian Lycett, and he has said that our opinion will be taken into consideration.

‘I am confident that they will remain the same.’

Any significant development at the Falkland Gardens would require planning permission.
