SAILORS on board HMS Dauntless showed off their ship’s manoeuvrability by carving a maritime ‘doughnut’ through the waves.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer is preparing to take part in the navy’s biannual war games off the coast of Scotland.

After spending four days in her twin city of Newcastle, the ship struck out into the North Sea to join warships and thousands of servicemen and women from different nations for Exercise Joint Warrior.

And to prepare for that coming test, HMS Dauntless was thrown around in the water at speed.

The ‘doughnut’ was created by testing both engines at full speed – over 30kts – and turning left.

Air crewman Petty Officer Taff Morris took this photograph from the cargo door of the ship’s embarked Merlin helicopter.
