WITH a flash of orange and an ear-splitting bang, HMS Diamond proved her fighting mettle with a test of her missile system off Scotland.

The third of the Royal Navy’s cutting edge Type 45 destroyers blasted her Sea Viper out of the silo at three times the speed of sound, obliterating a 600mph jet-powered target drone in the Outer Hebrides.

The missile firing means that the Portsmouth-based ship is now ready to take her place as a fully operational warship, capable of deploying anywhere in the world.
