HMS Queen Elizabeth: Royal Navy carrier pays tributes to 9/11 victims on anniversary of terror attack while in America

The 65,000-tonne leviathan is currently on a 11 week deployment to the U.S. for historic flight tests. 

The crew of the aircraft carrier paid tribute to the 9/11 victims on the 17th anniversary of the attack - which happened in New York City in 2001. 

HMS Queen Elizabeth posted on twitter: '˜Tuesday thoughts are with our American Brothers and Sisters and all those affected by the 9/11 atrocities.

'˜In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner,

'˜O! long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

'˜Never Forget.' 

The 9/11 terror attacks took place in New York City on September 11, 2001 and claimed the lives of 2,996 people. 

Two hijacked aeroplanes '“ American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 '“ flew into the North and South towers of the World Trade Centre in Manhattan. 

HMS Queen Elizabeth is on an 11 week deployment to America for historic flight tests. 

The aircraft carrier arrived in Mayport, Florida for a re-supply stop last week after leaving Portsmouth in mid-August. 

She will then sail north up the East Coast of America to Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland for the flight tests, 

The historic tests will see the first landing of the F-35B, the UK's new stealth jet, onto the enormous flight deck of the 65,000-tonne leviathan.
