FAMILIES braved the biting cold this morning to wave off their loved ones on a Royal Navy ship.

Patrol vessel HMS Severn sailed from Portsmouth today for an eight-month deployment away from home waters to the north Atlantic.

Her ship’s company will provide security and assurance to the UK’s overseas territories in the Caribbean and will be on standby for disaster relief operations.

Charlotte Hopkins, 25, from Swindon, was at the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth this morning to say farewell to fiance Able Seaman Chris ‘Mal’ Mackins who serves on board.

She said: ‘It’s very emotional. I’m going to miss him but will be looking forward to seeing him next.’
