LOCAL MPs say a meeting with diplomat Sir John Holmes over the Arctic Convoys review bodes well for the future.

Gosport MP Caroline Dinenage and Penny Mordaunt, MP for Portsmouth South, today met Sir John, who is leading an independent review into the rules governing war medals.

Caroline Dinenage said: ‘He is clearly taking this very seriously and he’s determined to do as much research as possible on this.

‘This review is something that could potentially remove all the main barriers to Arctic Convoy veterans getting their medals and it was positive to have a meeting and put our position across.’

Penny Mordaunt posted on Twitter: ‘Met Sir John Holmes about medal review and in particular the Arctic Convoy Veterans. Excellent meeting. Hopefully review will be complete soon.’

The Arctic Heroes braved freezing conditions and attacks from Nazi U-boats and planes on vital missions to keep the Soviet Union fighting in the Second World War.

They are set to find out in September to find out if they will finally be awarded a medal for the campaign, which cost 3,000 British lives.
