THE company of a Portsmouth-based minehunter have new football kits thanks to a Premier League team.

HMS Atherstone’s sailors have received the gear from Leicester City Football Club, the closest team to their affiliated town of Atherstone.

The company will wear the Foxes’ kit when they find time for games during their current deployment in the Gulf.

Able Seamen Tapan Patel, who requested the donation, said: ‘The lads are extremely grateful and proud to receive the new kit.

‘There is only one person on board who is slightly hesitant when putting the Foxes shirt on – the Marine Engineering Officer Scott Johnson, a lifelong Nottingham Forest fan.

‘Hopefully the ship’s football team can now replicate Claudio Ranieri’s managerial success.’
