AIRCRAFT carrier HMS Illustrious is back home after a successful training exercise in the Mediterranean.

The Portsmouth-based warship was deployed for three months as part of the UK’s Response Force Task Group, which is there to respond to an international crisis at short notice.

The deployment first saw Lusty sail for Cornwall, before heading out into the Med to train with Danish, French and Spanish navies.

More than 3,000 sailors and Royal Marines took part in Exercise Cougar – the flagship exercise of the deployment.

Commodore Paddy McAlpine, Commander of the United Kingdom Task Group, said: ‘The exercises were excellent opportunities for us to develop partnerships with key allies, and to prove interoperability as part of coalitions of the willing.’
