SAILING through the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean,
Portsmouth-based HMS Illustrious arrived in Malta for a five-day visit to her home from home.
More than 1,500 sailors and marines lined the deck of the helicopter carrier as she entered the port of Valetta.
The ship’s company will later hold an event for representatives from three Maltese cities the carrier is twinned with due to a previous HMS Illustrious which was bombed during the Second World War and was repaired at Grand Harbour.
Captain Martin Connell said: ‘We are very much aware of not just the history of this ship but also the previous Illustrious and what the people of Malta did to help save her in 1941.’
