NEW defence minister Mark Francois visited Portsmouth yesterday to learn about life in the Royal Navy.

The minister of state for defence personnel, welfare and veterans toured Navy Command HQ at HMS Excellent, Whale Island, and met with sailors at Portsmouth Naval Base.

Mr Francois, who took over from Andrew Robathan in the recent ministerial reshuffle, was also taken on tours around HMS Illustrious, the Naval Historical Branch and the National Museum of the Royal Navy.

After a meeting with the Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Charles Montgomery, the minister spoke to representatives of the Naval Families Federation and husbands and wives of serving navy personnel.
