A FORMER Portsmouth Grammar School pupil has completed the first phase of his officer training.

Sub Lieutenant Rob Clarke, pictured, from Fareham, is bidding to become a marine engineering officer in the Royal Navy.

He graduated from Cambridge University with a masters engineering degree and worked at a ski resort before joining the navy in May last year.

The course at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth develops leadership skills alongside the academic work.

Ten weeks were spent at sea in the amphibious assault ship, HMS Bulwark which was operating mainly in UK waters and was involved with a Nato exercise off Scotland.

Sub Lt Clarke is now at the engineering shore training establishment, HMS Sultan, Gosport.
