THE Ministry of Defence has still not decided on the future of HMS Ark Royal – 12 months after bidding closed for the axed aircraft carrier in Portsmouth.

Officials continue to work through the bids received for the 22,000-tonne warship.

This is despite the MoD saying a decision would be made by early this year.

An MoD spokeswoman said: ‘There’s not a hold up. I think we all know how much of a big deal this is and how many people want the chance of owning an iconic piece of equipment.

‘We’ve got to go through all the bids with a fine tooth comb.

‘There was a lot of interest. For commercial reasons I can’t tell you how many bids there were, but there were a lot.’

The Ark could be sold for scrap metal.

Other known proposals include a commercial heliport in London, a diving wreck off Devon, a school in China , or as a floating casino in Hong Kong.
