PENSIONERS enjoyed a free lunch from the Royal Navy.

HMS Sultan in Gosport hosted dozens of retired people at the warrant officers’, senior rates’ and senior non-commissioned officers’ mess at the base.

The Pensioners Christmas Dinner has been running since 1972 and offers free entertainment, live music, raffle and bingo.

Deputy mayor of Gosport Keith Farr and deputy mayoress June Farr also attended.

Cllr Farr said: ‘HMS Sultan employs a lot of local people and work very hard to integrate with the local community throughout the year.

‘It’s a real privilege to have been invited along to show our support for the event, everyone involved has taken such good care of us all.’

The event is partly funded from donations made by mess members and cash from the Sultan Summer Show.

Base warrant officer and mess president Dave Pottle said the event went well.

He said: ‘We were delighted to welcome local elderly people into the establishment for the evening.’
