ARMED forces minister Mark Francois was shown the strength of a Type 45 destroyer on a visit to Portsmouth.
The minister was on a visit to the base with US ambassador Matthew Barzun.
They were given an in-depth tour of Portsmouth-based HMS Diamond, one of the Royal Navy’s six new destroyers to see how the ships are benefitting the navy.
Commander Andy Ingham, HMS Diamond’s commanding officer, said: ‘It has been a great pleasure and privilege to demonstrate to the ambassador and armed forces minister the significant capabilities of the Type 45 destroyer.
‘This class of warship is surpassed by no other when it comes to air defence.
‘It is the height of technology and innovation and is a priceless UK and coalition asset when operating in areas in which there may be an airborne threat.’
The guests also visited the USS Missouri, an American submarine which is in Portsmouth on a short visit.
