MP Mike Hancock has stepped down from the influential House of Commons Defence Select Committee.
Mr Hancock has decided to stand aside after claims were made of a four year affiar with a former aide.
Katia Zatuliveter, Mr Hancock’s 26 year-old former parliamentary assistant, told a deportation appeals hearing she had opened envelopes addressed to him, and marked ‘private and confidential’ while he was a committee member.
Ms Zatuliveter is suspected by MI5 and the Home Office of being a spy for the Russian government, a charge she denies.
In February this year, she was ordered to leave the country, but has chosen to fight the decision.
Her appeal continues, and is expected to last until Friday, October 28.
