A SAILOR from HMS Westminster is missing in Dubai.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that a member of the Portsmouth-based warship’s company did not return to the vessel before it left the United Arab Emirates country yesterday.

Routine checks were carried out by the navy before Westminster sailed, but they could not locate the sailor and local authorities were told about the situation.

The missing person’s next of kin has been informed that he did not return to the ship – which is conducting a major international operation in the Gulf.

An MoD spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that a member of HMS Westminster’s crew is currently missing in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.

‘This has been reported to the local authorities, who are treating the incident as a missing person event.

‘The MoD is working closely with the foreign office and local authority representatives.

‘The individual’s next of kin has been informed and is being provided with support from the Royal Navy.’
