A SAILOR has described his sadness at leaving HMS Edinburgh after her final deployment.

Chief Petty Officer Mark Hooper returned to Portsmouth today on board the Type 42 destroyer.

She is the first ship the 38-year-old ever served on, and although he has served on other ships since, he ended up back on the destroyer he loves so much.

CPO Hooper, from Whiteley, said: ‘I started off on Edinburgh in 1998 which was the first ship for me.

‘I just love the Type 42s, there is a great atmosphere on them and people have always said that.

‘I’m always sad to leave the ships but the navy is all about new challenges and moving on.’
