ONLY now HMS Liverpool’s sailors have returned from war can they start to reflect on the last seven months fighting off Libya.

The ship’s captain, Commander Colin Williams, assembled his men and women in the hangar on Sunday evening to praise them for a job well done.

Engineering technician Mark Richardson, 25, said: ‘When he was saying how proud he was and was listing our achievements it gave me goosebumps.

‘It’s been stressful at times and tiring but I’m so proud to have been a part of it.’

Petty Officer Robert Allan, 36, said: ‘A lot of the time it was incredibly tense, especially when we were within 10 miles of the shore batteries. It was up to experienced guys like myself to calm down the junior sailors.’
