SAILORS on security patrols in the Gulf showed the importance of their efforts to the commander of the Portsmouth flotilla.

Commodore Paddy McAlpine went on board HMS Defender for two days to witness first hand the vital role the ship has been playing alongside other coalition units in the region to bolster security in the Middle East. As well as witnessing live operations, Cdre McAlpine took the time to talk to the officers and ratings on board and hear their account of the impressive work which HMS Defender has undertaken, as well as their experiences in various ports visited.

He said: ‘HMS Defender has had a hugely successful maiden deployment.’
