The Royal Navy welcomed the vessel to Portsmouth in a post on the naval base’s official Twitter account. It said: ‘Welcome to @kon_marine and HMNLS Walrus. May this beautiful weather last for the rest of the weekend for you!’

The 233ft boat is a Walrus-class submarine and has a top speed of 20 knots underwater.

She was laid down in 1978 and launched in October 1985. However, a fire caused serious damaged. She eventually came into service in 1992.

Walrus has been involved in a rangew of Nato training exercises and ‘sank’ a number of US warships, including aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt during mock fights.

She will leave Portsmouth at 1pm Monday.
