Commuters faced long delays this morning and buses were cancelled due to what was believed to be a crash on the main road into the city.

There are also delays close to Unicorn and Trafalgar Gates and that, coupled with the suspected crash in Market Way, caused gridlock on the surrounding roads.

In a statement on Hovertravel website the company said: ‘Due to severe congestion in Portsmouth, the Hoverbus will not be operating to its advertised timetable until further notice.’

And First Bus said: ‘Unfortunately we are experiencing delays on all services coming in and out of Portsmouth due to an accident at Market Way.

‘On top of this the dockyard is on high security alert so all vehicles are being stopped and checked. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.’

However, a spokesman for the Royal Navy said there were no problems at the gates. They added: ‘The security level remains the same, the checks today have been routine and the traffic flowing into and out of the Dockyard is normal.’

The roads are now flowing freely.
