GOVERNMENT officials from the Chinese city of Yuxi visited Portsmouth to take in its historic sights.

Yuxi vice-mayor Xie Xingrong and his colleagues were welcomed by Karen Roebuck, head of marketing at Tourism South East, for a day of meetings and fact-finding at some of the city’s top tourism spots.

The group visited HMS Victory, the Spinnaker Tower and Charles Dickens Birthplace Museum.

Jia Zeng, deputy general manager of Newland Travel, which specialises in business visits from China, said: ‘There are many business opportunities for UK partners in the areas of tourism management and urban planning in China’s fast-growing cities.

‘We work with many of them to try and help find business opportunities in cities such as Portsmouth while also generating tourism income for the local community.’

Carol Plunkett, from Tourism South East, said the visits help boost Portsmouth’s profile as a tourism destination and build relationships.
