Councillor Lynn Hook, the Mayor of Gosport, opened the new all-weather green at Gosport Bowling Club, to the delight of members.

The club is unusual in that it has two greens to play on. But they both close in September for the winter season.

But the club managed to secure a grant of £75,000 from the National Lottery. That was topped up to the £110,000 needed by grants from Hampshire County Council and Gosport Borough Council, and fundraising by the club.

Honorary secretary Ken Stanbury said: ‘The members were very pleased indeed.

‘It took eight weeks for the green to be fitted and we had more than 100 people sign up to take part in our winter season almost immediately.

People are coming from other clubs all over the area because we have one of the only all-weather greens.’

The club is in Anglesey Gardens, Alverstoke. There is free coaching for new members, Call (023) 9252 1745.
