Dog show leaves big smiles on residents' faces at care homeÂ

It was a four-legged frenzy at the Fernes Care Home as the community came out in support of the first dog show held at the 52-bedroom centre that cares for people with dementia.

Residents and guests were treated to a variety of entertainment including a raffle, tombola, dog tricks, as well as watching the friendly furry animals take on the agility assault course.

Funds raised on the day will be pumped back into the care home while the rest will be donated to the RSPCA.

Kat Claridge, activities co-ordinator said: '˜It's been a really fun day with everyone having a great time. There's been lots for people to do and the residents have loved it.

'˜We have one lady who does not talk or move very much but as soon as we put a dog on her lap you could see her face light up and she started moving her hands. We wanted to make it a fun day for them and give them something to look forward to.

'˜Hopefully we will have another one next year and we'll also be having a Christmas event too which should see a good turnout again with most of the people here today saying they will be here for that too.

'˜This was our first big event as we've only been here just over two years so it was great to open our doors to the community and nice to see everyone - including the dogs - having such a nice time.'

While humans soaked up the fun party atmosphere, they were not the only ones in for a treat as dogs befriended one another and enjoyed delicious homemade nibbles on offer from Corrina Pup Cakes - ranging from chicken and carrot to banana and peanut. Corrina Parker, 25, owner of the business, said: '˜It's been such a nice day for everyone. I know the residents have loved having the dogs here. The dogs have enjoyed themselves too!'

Dog lover Maria Fuccio, 62, of Gosport, brought her two eight-week-old teacup Yorkshire terriers and two long-hair Chihuahuas. She said: '˜To see the residence respond and interact like they do with dogs is priceless. It's also very good training for the dogs as it teaches them how to socialise.'
