Don’t Hate, Donate has been handing out free food this month at Guildhall Square and at the weekend it was supported by Southsea restaurant The Akash.

The curry restaurant wanted to give something back to the community and made batches of biryani for people to enjoy for free.

As well as the food being enjoyed by homeless people, others on the poverty line also went along on Saturday.

Faz Ahmed, from The Akash, said: ‘We have done quite a bit of charity work before so when Don’t Hate, Donate got in touch with us, we were happy to get involved.

‘We made a lot of curry for people to have and it was good seeing so many people come down and take advantage of the opportunity.

‘Even though a lot of the work Don’t Hate, Donate does is for people abroad, they are also supporting people in Portsmouth which is so important.’

The food was well received by people in the second week the scheme’s been running.

Russell Allen, who is currently homeless, said: ‘This whole project is a brilliant idea.

‘There aren’t a lot of places for homeless people to go on the weekend so for this to run on Saturdays is good.’

During the free lunch, kind members of the public were dropping off food that can be given out by the charity throughout the week.

Don’t Hate, Donate is asking people to donate food so their weekly event can grow and help feed more people.
