FIREFIGHTERS tackled a car fire that began after a woman attempted to start her car.

A crew from Southsea fire station went to the blaze on Portchester Road, in North End, yesterday at 11am.

The engine compartment was well alight when the crew arrived and they used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to extinguish the fire.

The crew said the owner tried to start the car but smelt smoke and saw flames in the engine after it failed to start.

She closed the bonnet and then called the fire service.
