PORTSMOUTH accountancy firm John Doyle Partnership has praised apprentices it took on through a local college.

The Fratton-based firm now has three apprentices through Highbury College, in Cosham.

‘It’s great to have someone with raw ability starting with the company,’ said company director Kevin Doyle.

‘And it’s a very cost-effective way of training, as we can access funding through the college and we can mould the apprentices into the type of employee that we require.’

Shana Breedon is the newest apprentice taken on by JDP, and said she always knew she wanted to be an accountant.

‘I started off doing A-levels but I wanted to get some work experience,’ said the 17-year-old. ‘I started here on a work experience basis – but then I moved up to doing an apprenticeship with JDP and Highbury College.

‘I find an apprenticeship a much better way to learn, because you learn where the numbers come from, and get an idea of the bigger picture.’
