MARRIAGES can be competitive at times, but one career-driven couple have a single goal in mind.

Ella Skelly, 31, is graduating with a foundation degree in Early Years Care and Education at Portsmouth University this week – with husband Wesley, 28, in his first year of the course. The couple dream of opening a nursery together one day.

Mrs Skelly, originally from Victoria in London, followed her partner of seven years into child care when Mr Skelly worked at the now-closed Portsmouth College Day Nursery. She took an apprenticeship at the nursery before its closure five years ago.

Ella now works as a family nanny in London. The couple live together at their Southsea home while husband Wesley works at Carousel Day Nursery, Northern Parade, in between his studies.

Despite her ties to the capital, Ella said: ‘I’m away for half the week but we didn’t want to move away from Portsmouth. It’s our home. We love it here.’
