Two hundred children took to the field as either Saxons or Normans to recreate the famous battle of 1066.

History subject leader and trip organiser, Miss Suzy Gudgeon, said: '˜By taking students to an historic site it enabled them to really engage with their learning, improve their understanding and also to deepen their love of such an amazing subject.'

Students had been learning about the Battle and subsequent conquest in their History lessons. In preparation for the battle scene, the pupils had had designed and created their own Norman or Saxon shields.

Miss Gudgeon said that the battle re-enactment had allowed students to thoroughly enjoy themselves whilst developing a depth of understanding which simply wouldn't have been possible in the classroom.

Year 7 student Grace,11, said: '˜When we recreated the shield wall it really inspired me and enabled me to picture what it would actually have looked like and felt like to be in such a battle.'

Samuel, also 11, said: '˜The battle was so much fun and it was great to use our shields and re-enact the whole conflict. I have learnt so much today.'
